What Is a Ball Vape? How They Work, and How to Run One

A ball vape is a dry herb vaporizer that heats air instead of your flower. Air is drawn over a cluster of heated quartz or ruby spheres, and that hot air passes down through the bowl. The material never touches a hot surface. That is convection, and it is the whole idea.

How a Ball Vape Works

Three things happen in sequence every time you draw.

  1. Air enters from the top. When you inhale, fresh air is pulled in through the top of the wand.
  2. The spheres heat it. Inside a titanium engine sits a bed of quartz or ruby spheres held at your set temperature. Air moving through that bed picks up heat quickly, because the spheres present a lot of surface for their size.
  3. Hot air passes through the bowl. The heated air travels down into your flower and vaporizes it on the way through. Vapor exits into your rig.

The spheres are the reason the design works. A single hot surface gives up its heat and cools; a bed of them holds temperature across a long draw and recovers between draws.

Neither is an upgrade on the other in every situation. A conduction unit is simpler and more portable. A ball vape gives you temperature control across a full bowl and pairs with glass you already like.

Worth being clear about one thing: a ball vape is not a self-contained desktop unit. The Flower Wand is injector-style. It runs off a separate controller and seats into a bowl on your own rig. If you are picturing a box you load and press a button on, this is a different kind of device.


What Temperature to Run

400°F to 600°F, and start around 500°F.

  • 400 to 500°F is the flavor end. Lighter vapor, more of the aroma compounds intact.
  • 500 to 600°F is the volume end. Denser draws, and the bowl clears more completely.

Move in small steps rather than jumping. Ten to twenty degrees is a noticeable change, and where you land shifts with how finely you grind and how densely you pack.

How to Use a Ball Vape

  1. Grind and load. Fill the bowl loosely to the first ledge. Packing it tight restricts airflow, and airflow is what carries the heat.
  2. Attach the bowl to your rig. Match the joint size, or use an adapter.
  3. Set your temperature and wait. About three minutes from cold.
  4. Seat the wand in the bowl. Hold it by the silicone handle. The engine runs hot.
  5. Draw slowly. Long, gentle pulls. A fast pull moves air through faster than the spheres can heat it.
  6. Poke and pack between draws. The included tool redistributes the material so the later draws match the early ones.
  7. Park the wand when you are done. Return it to the stand. It stays hot after the controller is off.

Wired or Wireless

Wired suits a fixed station. Wireless suits passing a rig around or keeping the table clear. Both use the same engines, the same bowls and the same controller.


Bowls, and Why They Matter

The bowl holds your flower and connects to your rig, so it decides fitment. MiniNail's flower bowls come in four materials:

Check your rig's joint before ordering. A bowl that does not fit is the most common avoidable mistake with a first ball vape setup.


What to Look at When Comparing Ball Vapes

  • Where the temperature is read. Some controllers display how hot the heating element is, which is not the temperature your air reaches. MiniNail reads the working surface, and every unit is calibrated to ±2°F before it ships.
  • Engine material. Quartz is the most flavor-neutral. Ruby is denser and holds heat harder through a long pull.
  • Whether it fits your glass. An injector-style wand works with rigs you already own. A self-contained unit does not.
